Curriculum

AIPA’s courses are designed to suit all music students’ needs – whether it is to learn an instrument to be able to play for fun during informal family settings, or to play on a professional stage. For this reason AIPA offers two levels of musical training: basic and comprehensive.

  • Basic Course

The basic course covers all the basic skills required to play an instrument at a level of proficiency that places the student's joy of playing in a low-pressure environment at its core. It is not designed to prepare a student for a career in music.

The course follows the examination structure of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (UK) and/or Trinity College London (UK).

  • Comprehensive Course

The Comprehensive Course is a training programme, spread across 5 levels, that aims to raise a new generation of professional musicians in Jordan.

There are several paths open to students following the completion of this course. Orchestral instrumentalists who complete this programme are invited to qualify for a position in the Amman Chamber Orchestra. Pianists and non-orchestral musicians are trained to form a new generation of soloists who would be eligible to perform concertos with the orchestra, to become collaborative chamber musicians and/or accompanists at a professional level. All students on this course can become teachers who are experienced in the art of performance.

The comprehensive course is designed with each individual student in mind and is a holistic programme that not only focuses on technical skills, but also furthers theoretical knowledge, as well as knowledge of historical and cultural contexts that allow students to develop into versatile, confident, informed, and imaginative performers.

The course offers regular assessments that are designed to serve as a source of motivation to help focus students’ private practice. Students can put their skills to the test in regular informal concerts that are designed as a platform for practising the art of performing in public. In addition, Saturday classes will be focused on ensemble training.

  • Choir & Musicianship

    Musicianship: 30 minutes

    Choir: 40 minutes

This course is ideal for those who seek to improve their musicianship skills and enjoy singing in a choir. There are no prerequisites for joining the course, however if an applicant does not read musical notation, they need to inform us upon registration so that our teachers can focus on musical literacy during their musicianship classes.

  • String Orchestra

This course is open to all string players even if they are not AIPA students.

On this course, we will explore Western and Middle Eastern Music. All ages and levels are welcome.

  • Private Consultation with Karim Said

This is ideal for advanced students or professionals seeking career advice or a private masterclass on piano, conducting or composition.

‘The 3 Ds’

Preparing for a career in music requires discipline, determination, and dedication. AIPA offers a broad range of musical subjects designed to develop the necessary skills in prospective students to become professional musicians. However, success towards playing at a professional level requires a time commitment from the student that includes attending all individual lessons, rehearsals and classes, and the discipline of private daily practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Where can I find more information specific to the basic and comprehensive programs?

You can find all the information regarding our programs here. If you have any further questions, please contact the institute to set a meeting with a member of the music faculty.

  • What performance opportunities are available to me at the institute?

Performance opportunities include regular student concerts that are open to the public in a low-pressure environment, where friends and family are encouraged to attend as supporters. Advanced students may apply to the ACO under the guidance of their teachers and take part in public performances. Students enrolled in the youth orchestra will perform as part of the orchestra in both public and internal performances.

  • Can I start learning a musical instrument at any age?

Yes, you can, but it is important to set your goals with your teacher in advance and to have a clear intended outcome, as certain skills are best taught at a very young age. However, at AIPA, we encourage all music lovers to join the community and develop their passion for music.

  • Is a classical foundation necessary for non-classical music?

It is highly encouraged. However, the musicianship courses at AIPA are intended to cater to all musical genres.
